An article by Straits Times (20 June 2019) shared that the average S'porean has the world's longest life expectancy of 84.8 years, but the number of years spent in POOR HEALTH has also gone up. Do you know what's the difference between life span and health span?
I started to have medical issues after age 40. I am no longer as healthy as I thought I was. I went for several surgeries. Nevertheless, I feel blessed that they were not major surgeries and I am back in health very quickly.
These episodes have made me realise that we should not take health for granted. This is especially important when our life span is expected to increase. In order words, we will LIVE LONGER. Are we ready to live longer? What if we are not healthy enough to enjoy our longer life span? As medical has advanced so much, we can now live long. But that does not mean that we will have good quality of life.
Stay healthy starting from today! Start exercising, even if it is only 10 minutes! And at the same time, please ensure that if you fall (due to illness or accident), do put "some sand" in advance so that you do not fall hard.
The government has reviewed and acknowledge the importance of long term care to address the need for disability income for health issues that may arise as we age and thereby introduced Care Shield Life for Singapore residents as young as 30 years old. Here is the basic information about Care Shield Life - https://www.careshieldlife.gov.sg/home.html
